Irregular Verbs: How to Remember Them

There is an exception to each rule. When learning foreign languages, this can create problems - not everyone has a good memory. Irregular verbs relate specifically to such exceptions - they can either be learned or not. Here are some simple tips for developing memory.

Surround yourself with irregular verbs! In any store you can buy small sticky notes. Write verb forms with translation on them and hang them on your desktop - so you will see and remember them.

It will be useful to prepare cards with verbs and their forms on one side and with their translation on the other. Such cards can always be carried with you in your pocket and repeated at any convenient time - in transport, in your spare time at work. If you forget something, you can always peek at the back of the card.

No matter how busy you are, take at least 10-15 minutes a day to learn a foreign language. Of these 10-15 minutes, 5 can definitely be spent on repeating irregular verbs. Just make a list of them and read them carefully every day, for example, before going to bed.

If you study a foreign language in courses or with a tutor, remember that a good teacher-methodologist always sets a lot of written assignments for grammar. Do not be lazy to carry out written assignments for irregular verbs and rewrite even those exercises in which you just need to insert the verb in the right form. As a rule, when writing, memory is especially active.

Buy books in the foreign language you are learning. Even if you have recently mastered the alphabet, even if you can read the most primitive book only with a dictionary. When you read and translate, words and word forms are remembered especially well. Buy books that are of interest to you and that you basically would like to read - interest in developing the plot will help you overcome difficulties in understanding.

Do not do one textbook all the time, get a few. Ideally, you should have a separate textbook on the grammar of the studied foreign language, or even a few. Each grammar student has its own strengths and weaknesses, one will help to better remember irregular verbs, the other will study modality issues.

Make a habit every time you try to silently translate what you said into the foreign language you are studying, and also, if you have friends and relatives who are studying the same foreign language, speak it at least 10-20 minutes a day. Such practice will allow to overcome the language barrier, fear of using a foreign language.
