The content of the thesis reflects its structure and creates a first impression of it. This is the “face” of your diploma, which should be attractive and impeccable. Here the level of the student’s research culture is manifested, his ability to present the results of his work. If you make negligence and errors in the preparation of the table of contents of the thesis, the reader begins to doubt the value of its content.

You will need

  • - The electronic text of the thesis;

  • - guidelines for the design of theses.

Instruction manual

one

Make out the contents of the diploma only after making all the semantic and design changes, when the work is fully completed. Otherwise, there is a high probability that the page numbering will "go" and will no longer correspond to the sequence of pages indicated in the contents of the diploma. The wording of chapters and paragraphs should also be final. However, headings consisting of two sentences are not entirely desirable.

2

The content of the diploma is immediately after the title page. The word "content" itself is written in capital letters at the top and center of the page. The content includes the titles of chapters (usually at least two and no more than four), paragraphs (at least two in each chapter) and paragraphs highlighted within each paragraph (a third-level heading should not be included in the contents of the diploma). Mandatory sections of the diploma are introduction, conclusion and list of references, often also include applications.

3

The text of the table of contents is printed at one and a half intervals. The point after headings and subheadings is not put. Type the headings of the first level in boldface Times New Roman, size 14, starting with a capital letter, then lowercase. True, in many cases all headings of the first level are printed in capital letters - this way the structure of the table of contents looks visually better. These are the names of chapters and sections such as introduction, conclusion, list of references and applications. The titles of the chapters indicate their number in Arabic numerals, the word "chapter" is not written in front of the number, no dot is placed after the chapter number.

4

Print paragraph titles in normal Times New Roman, size 14, lowercase letters (first uppercase). Do not put a paragraph sign (§) or write the word “paragraph” before the heading. Number the paragraphs in Arabic numerals, where the first indicates the number of the chapter where the paragraph belongs, and the second indicates the number of the paragraph itself within this chapter (for example: 2.2). They do not put a dot after the paragraph number. The paragraphs within the paragraph have a three-digit number, where the last digit is the paragraph number in this paragraph (for example: 2.2.2).

5

Opposite the title of each section and subsection, indicate the page number with which it begins in the text of the diploma. An ellipsis is placed between the last letter of the name and the page number. To visually align the column of numbers, you can use the Tab key after typing and print page numbers for all headings at the same level. You can create a table of two columns, where the heading will be in the left column and the corresponding page numbers in the right column. When printing, select the option "Table - Hide grid" and the lines will not be visible. Those who can do automatic table of contents of a document can use this function.

note

Each university and faculty have guidelines for the design of term papers and dissertations. Although the general rules for their design at Russian universities are generally the same, there are also differences. This is due to the fact that there is no state standard for registration of theses. Universities are guided by the standards for the design of research work in accordance with GOST 7.32-2001, GOST R 7.0.5-2008.

Useful advice

If there are applications in your work, each of them should have its own number and name - and this should be reflected in the contents of the diploma.
