Convert fuel to tons is convenient for filling reporting papers. And, of course, it’s also more convenient to sell fuel in tons rather than liters. However, it is often with this translation that many people have problems.

When it is necessary to calculate automobile gasoline, diesel fuel, liquefied gas not in volume but in weight units, then their actual density (specific gravity) should be taken as the main unit of calculation. Calculating this is pretty simple. To do this, you just need to multiply the available number of liters by the actual density. Then the result is divided by 1000, and the desired number is obtained.

The only thing that can negatively affect the conversion of fuel from liters to tons is the temperature. The hotter, the greater the specific gravity of the fuel. Therefore, in order to facilitate such calculations and make them without errors, the Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Russian Federation decided to average the density value for gasoline. So, for example, for A-76 (AI-80) fuel, the average specific gravity is 0.715 grams per cubic centimeter. For gasoline AI-92, the average actual density is set at 0.735 grams per cubic centimeter, while for AI-95 this figure is 0.750 grams. As for the AI-98 fuel grade, the average specific gravity is 0.765 grams per centimeter cubic.

In the case when it is necessary to calculate the conversion from liters to tons of diesel fuel (this is usually necessary in retail), you need to use the following formula: M = V x 0.769 / 1000. Here M is the volume of diesel fuel in tons, V is the volume of diesel fuel in liters, 0.769 is the density indicator for diesel fuel at the rate of kilograms per liter.

You can use the average value that is accepted in Rostekhnadzor to calculate the conversion of fuel into tons. They adopted their own standards in the calculation of fuel density. So, for example, for liquefied gas the average value is 0.6 tons per cubic meter, gasoline - 0.75 tons per cubic meter, and for diesel fuel this figure is 0.84 tons / m3.
