Amps and volts are standard system units for measuring current and voltage (EMF), respectively. Amps cannot be directly converted to volts, since these are completely different albeit “related” units of measure. However, in practice, it is often necessary to do such a conversion. This usually requires additional information.

You will need

  • - ammeter;

  • - ohmmeter;

  • - wattmeter;

  • - calculator;

  • - technical documentation.

Instruction manual

one

To convert amperes to volts, check the power of the appliance or the resistance of the conductor. The power of the devices can be found in the technical documentation or on the instrument housing. If documents for the device are not available, look for its technical parameters (power) on the Internet or measure it with a wattmeter. To determine the resistance of the conductor, use an ohmmeter.

2

If the power of the appliance is known, then to convert the amperes to volts, use the following formula: U = P / I, where: U is the voltage, in volts, P is the power, in watts, I is the current strength, in amperes. Under "power" is meant power consumed by the appliance.

3

Example: An electric motor is known to provide 1900 watts of power. Its efficiency is 50%. At the same time, a 10 ampere fuse was detected in the engine. Question: What voltage is the motor rated for? Solution. To calculate the power consumed by the appliance, divide its effective power by efficiency: 1900 / 0.5 = 3800 (watts). To calculate the voltage, divide the power current strength: 3800/10 = 380 (volts). Answer. For the operation of the electric motor, a voltage of 380 volts is required.

4

If the electrical resistance of a conductor or a simple heating appliance (for example, an iron) is known, then use Ohm's law to convert amperes to volts: U = IR, where R is the resistance of the conductor, in ohms

5

Example: The resistance of an electric stove coil is 110 ohms. A current of 2 amperes passes through the stove. Question: What is the voltage in the power grid? Solution. U = 2 * 110 = 220 (volts). Answer. The voltage in the power grid is 220 volts.

6

Example: The resistance of a spiral bulb for a flashlight is 90 ohms. In the on state, a current of 0.05 amperes passes through it. Question: How many standard batteries will the flashlight need to work? Solution. U = 0.05 * 90 = 4.5 (volts). The EMF of one battery is 1.5 volts, therefore, for the flashlight you will need 4.5 / 1.5 = 3 of these elements.
