Often at school or at an institute, an English teacher asks us to write a story about ourselves. Often the phrases and cliches used in this story are used by us in life when communicating with foreigners.

The content of the story about yourself in English may vary. It depends on why and for whom this story is being written. Of course, the style and information provided varies depending on whether this is a resume or an educational story. However, there are some cliches that can be used both in one case and in another.

To write a story about yourself, you must first introduce yourself. For this we use phrases: Hello, My name is (name). Then, the most frequently reported age and occupation are: I am (age) years old. I work (talk about where and by whom you work). Or, if you are studying, you should use the wording I am a student of (enter the name of the university, specialty). You can specify: I will be a teacher. I work as a teacher in the school. Speaking about the place of residence, you need to remember that the article is not preceded by the name of the city: I live in Moscow.

From general information about yourself, we pass to a small description. You can describe your qualities, traits, preferences. For this, it is best to use the following colloquial formulas: I am a romantic lady, I am a reliable and honest person, I am a creative teacher. Words must be precisely chosen, since even synonyms do not have completely identical meanings. To do this, use the English-Russian and Russian-English dictionaries.

The verbs like, love, prefer: I like all kinds of music are used to describe preferences. I love this film. I prefer Italian dishes. You can also use the constructs: my favorite city is …, the most iteresting (film) for me is …: My favorite books are adventures and horror, love stories. I don't like, I hate to describe unloved objects and phenomena (I hate - attention! - this is a rather strong degree of rejection). If you need to talk about your hobby, you can start this section with a general phrase: I think it is necessary to have a hobby. Your free time is not wasted. My favorite hobby is English.

When describing their family, they most often start with common phrases: My family is big. There are four of us: mother, father, little brother and me. Then, according to the general scheme, each family member is briefly described. Naturally, the pronoun and the verb are changing: instead of I am they use she is, he is. If it is an animal, then, as a rule, it is denoted by the pronoun it (is).

To conclude, it is best to say about your expected future, plans or dreams: I have a dream … I want to do … However, the end of the story completely depends on the goals of the compilation. Sometimes it is necessary to ask questions to the interlocutor, sometimes to answer the interviewer's questions.

Always specify the meanings of unfamiliar words, even if they are similar to Russian, they are often translated very differently than it seems (these are the so-called "false friends of the translator"). If possible, structure your story.
