Phonetics of English and Russian languages, similar in general terms, differs in particulars. Some Russian sounds have no analogue in the English alphabet, and vice versa. One of the most striking examples is the sound "g", for the designation of which in English until recently there was only vaguely similar in pronunciation to "g". Now the sound "w" is indicated in English by a special digraph.

The sound "g" in some cases is indicated by the letter "g". At the same time, the vowels from the list should follow the consonant: “i”, “e”, “y”. In such cases, the letter will be read as a soft "j".

The sound from the letter “j” is read in a similar way, but it is practically not used to record a specific sound. Its scope is words borrowed from the Latin language (in ancient Saxon it is absent).

The digraph “zh” fully corresponds to the Russian sound “z” and is used exclusively in borrowed words: Zhukovsky, Zhenya, Zheleznogorsk.
