Information and data are the basic concepts that are used in computer science. This science deals with issues of systematization, storage, processing and transmission of data and information by means of computer technology. These concepts are often used as synonyms, but there are fundamental differences between them.
Data is a collection of information that is recorded on any medium - paper, disk, film. This information should be in a form suitable for storage, transmission and processing. Further data conversion provides information. Thus, information can be called the result of analysis and data conversion. A variety of data is stored in the database, and the database management system can provide the required information on a specific request. For example, you can find out from the school database which of the students lives on a particular street or who did not get a bad mark during the year, etc. Data turns into information when they are interested. It can be argued that information is the data used.
The word "information" comes from the Latin informatio, which means "information, presentation, explanation." Also called information is information about objects, environmental phenomena, their properties, which reduce the degree of uncertainty, incompleteness of knowledge. As a result of the exchange of information, a more complete picture of the subject is formed, and the level of awareness is increased.
Information does not exist in isolation, by itself. There is always a source that produces it and a receiver that perceives it. Any object acts as a source or receiver - a person, computer, animal, plant. Information is always intended for a specific object.
A person receives information from a variety of sources - when reading, listening to the radio, watching television, when he touches the subject, tastes the food. Different people may perceive the same information in different ways.
Depending on the scope of use, there is scientific, technical, economic and other types of information. This is a powerful means of influencing the individual and society as a whole. According to the well-known expression, who owns the greatest information on any issue, that owns the world, that is, is in a winning position in comparison with others. In everyday life, the development of society, the health and life of people depends on information.
Over the millennia, mankind has accumulated vast reserves of knowledge, which all continue to increase. The amount of information these days doubles every two years. In any situation, even the most ordinary, only relevant, complete, reliable and understandable information is effective. Only relevant, that is, timely received information can benefit people. It is important to know the weather forecast or warning about a hurricane on the eve, and not on the same day.
