How to defend a doctoral dissertation

A doctoral dissertation is a scientific and qualification work prepared with the aim of increasing an academic degree. A doctorate degree is awarded only after defending a doctoral dissertation. The protection procedure includes several points.

Choose a dissertation council and line up for defense. Your institution may have its own council and several of its members specializing in your topic. If you don’t have your own advice, you will have to make new connections.

Submit your work to the dissertation council, which will issue an opinion on your monograph. The Council will analyze the relevance, novelty, degree of participation of the author in scientific research. The opinion shall be issued no later than 3 months before the day of defense.

Prepare an abstract. It should be published in the form of a brochure of two printed pages and contain the main ideas and conclusions of the dissertation.

Send your abstract to the basic Russian libraries, council members, interested persons and organizations. Ship in advance at least one month before protection. Save the receipts of the post office, they indicate the date of mailing, so for you they will be a supporting document.

Collect a set of reviews. You should receive feedback on the dissertation from a leading organization, from three official opponents. At the abstract you should receive feedback from four to five recipients. Select a reputable institution as the lead organization. Get feedback with the signature of the head of the organization, affixed with the official stamp. Finished reviews will go through approval at a meeting of the department or the Academic Council. Take an extract from the protocol with a date no later than two weeks before the time of protection.

Get ready for protection. Perhaps the defense will raise some questions that need to be answered.

Prepare documents to the Higher Attestation Commission at the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. An academic degree is awarded at a meeting of the dissertation council after public defense of a doctoral dissertation. But the final word remains with the Higher Attestation Commission.
