How to come up with a theme for an essay

Composition is a standard work on literature, which is designed to determine how much the student has understood the work. However, students often get stuck when they need to choose a topic on their own.

Write about the author's style. The themes of such works are approximately as follows: “Metaphors in the work of Blok”, “The Special Construction of Mayakovsky’s Poems” or “Dostoevsky’s Deep Psychologism”. That is, you will not write about one specific work, but about creativity in general. Such a choice of topic will significantly increase the volume of the essay, if necessary.

Characterize. For example, "The image of Colonel Nai-Turs at Bulgakov." The choice of a single character (or group) is advantageous in that you do not have to disassemble the entire book in detail - only a few episodes you need will be sufficient, in which the character of the characters is revealed. Moreover, such an essay will turn out to be very psychological - if you can correctly describe the character's character and the thought that the author emphasizes with his help, then a high mark is provided.

Do not take problematic issues as a topic. Thus, you risk greatly narrowing the volume of the text, because, after answering the question, you will not be able to develop the idea further. On the contrary, if you take the too extensive point “The Problem of Fathers and Children at Turgenev”, then you will need thorough knowledge of the whole novel and a detailed analysis of all the important episodes, otherwise you will have to explain why you ignored this or that scene.

Check out the textbook on literature. It must necessarily contain at least a superficial analysis of the novel and the main ideas that the author wanted to convey to the reader. Already on the basis of the analysis you have read, you can choose one of the small "intermediate" topics, and write an essay on it. Also, be sure to check if the textbook contains actually “topics for essays” - in this case, just take one of the proposed ones.

Use other people's works. The method is the easiest and dishonest, but having the right to exist. Of course, downloading ready-made versions and rewriting them verbatim is not the best way, so just try to look through “works” on War and Peace. ”You will see many topics that you yourself would not have guessed, and read how they were disassembled by other authors: already on Based on this, writing your own version will be much easier.
