How to understand English by ear

One of the most important foreign language skills is listening, that is, listening to a foreign language. For those who learn English in a non-English country, this is usually the most difficult.

Any skill, including listening to English, should be trained. Since at first it seems very difficult, most students try, consciously or not, to leave these classes “for later”, at first they try to learn grammar, pronunciation, learn new words, but avoid listening. But no skill can be mastered in theory, practice is needed. After all, you can’t learn to swim, just reading about how to do it right.

Surround yourself with English as much as possible. Use the Internet to listen to English-language broadcasts, watch English and American films without dubbing, use educational audio materials. At the same time, it is not necessary to allocate time for this - just listen, washing dishes, ironing clothes, doing cleaning. Even if you don’t understand individual words or can’t say what it is about, thanks to such listening you get used to the pace and style of the language.

Try to use materials that are interesting for you personally - someone is better suited to listen to British news, someone can spend hours listening to songs of English-speaking artists, someone seems more useful and effective to listen to special educational texts, and someone sees the point only in direct communication with friends.

Exercise regularly, make it a rule to devote some time every day to listening - how much it will turn out, but the more the better.

Getting to listening, do not forget about training other skills - grammar, reading, speaking, writing. To get the maximum effect when learning a language, you need to do it comprehensively.

When you purposefully listen to the text, be focused, but not tense. Add images, pictures based on familiar vocabulary, not paying attention to the unfamiliar. This is a common mistake - students hear an incomprehensible word or phrase and thinking what it means, lose their thought and are completely disoriented in the text, although these words can be absolutely unimportant for understanding the meaning.
