How to teach a child to write essays

Children have to write essays on various topics throughout almost the entire course of school. The child’s academic performance, as well as his literacy, ability to build coherent sentences, express his thoughts, etc. directly depend on how good the child writes texts. The sooner parents begin to teach their child to write compositions, the better.

Explain to the child that it is not enough just to write down the theme of the essay; you should also briefly indicate the recommendations of the teacher. The fact is that often teachers give a low rating even for a good job just because it does not meet the requirements. Recommendations may relate to the structure of the composition, design, content features, use of sources, etc.

Remember that you should only advise, help, educate, but not do the work instead of the child. It’s okay if he’s not good at first. Let it seem to you that your child is given too complex tasks, or that he will not have time to write an essay on time. Even the most obedient and responsible children quite quickly get used to the fact that lessons can not be done, because for sure good parents will do everything themselves.

Do not allow the child to write an essay immediately to the clean-up. Let him first make a draft, then you will read it together with the baby, point out the mistakes that he made, and help to fix them. Only after the composition has been finalized properly, allow to rewrite it in a clean copy. Carefully work through the text, be sure to explain to the student what he made a mistake and why, but do not correct the defects silently. Do it calmly, without reproaches and especially without abuse, otherwise the process of writing an essay will turn into torture.

If a child cannot write an essay, try to reason with him on a given topic, to build a logical train of thoughts. For example, if you want to write a standard essay on how the baby spent the summer, remind him of the most pleasant moments, talk about them, help the child determine what events need to be written and in what sequence.

Do not let the child write off other people's texts and teach him to work with the writings of critics. To write some essays, quotes of poets, writers, philosophers, etc., are required, but this does not mean that the student must make an account from the work of another person. Help him express his own thoughts, understand that the source should not serve as the basis of the entire composition. Firstly, the child must learn to think independently, and secondly, if he simply rewrites someone else's work in his own words, the teacher will definitely notice this and is unlikely to give a high mark.
