A review is a review of a work of art: a book, a film, a performance. The reviewer expresses his attitude to the work, making a brief analysis and arguing his conclusions. To write a quality review, follow a few simple rules.

Instruction manual

one

Remember that review is a genre of journalism and an element of art criticism. Write only about the work that you have personally read. It’s unethical to give a review of a movie that you haven’t even seen (even though you’ve heard reviews of friends about it).

2

Briefly describe the main output of the work. If you are writing about a book, indicate the author, title of the book, name of the publisher, and year of issue. If we are talking about a film or a performance, do not forget to indicate the director and the debut date together with the name.

3

Analyze the novelty and relevance of the artwork in question. Here we allow an analysis of both the subject and the artistic techniques used by the author of the work. Focus on successful creative discoveries and suggest that the new work brings to the world culture.

4

List the positive aspects of the work. Analyze not only the content, but also the form, compositional features, and style of the author. Remember that analysis is not a retelling, but a thorough analysis of the work to confirm your assumption. The objectivity of the review will depend not only on the skill of critical analysis, but also on your horizons.

5

List the negative sides, indicate the negative and controversial aspects of the work. Avoid the wording "I didn’t like it …", better write as follows: "Doubt causes the author’s postulate about …"

6

Evaluate the work and, if appropriate, write a recommendation. It is important that this assessment be supported by critical analysis and arguments. In the review you give not only your own attitude, but also form the image of the work in the eyes of potential readers.

note

Review suggests brevity. Its volume cannot exceed 3-5 thousand characters. Larger reviews are called reviews.
