How was the phone invented

The creation of the telephone was the logical result of the work of many scientists. And, as in many other similar cases, the invention of the apparatus could not do without scandals involving dozens of scientists who, in endless lawsuits, tried to prove their pre-emptive right to a patent.

Preparatory work

The idea of ​​creating a telephone operating on the principle of electromagnetic transmission and reception of a signal appeared in 1833, when Karl Friedrich Gauss and Wilhelm Eduard Weber invented an electromagnetic device for transmitting telegraph signals. Then, in 1837, the American Charles Grafton Page noticed that connecting and disconnecting the electric current in the winding of the electromagnet creates some sound. The effect was called "galvanic music."

The first apparatus to transmit sound through wires was assembled in 1860 by Johann Philipp Reis, a school physics teacher from Germany. The principle of its operation was to create an alternating current, which magnetized and demagnetized the receiver rod, creating a sound. The device was created from improvised means in a barn, and the researcher was ridiculed at home and accused of quackery in the United States.
