The word "sonnet" is translated from Italian as "song". This is a poetic work of the lyrical genre. In its content, a sonnet represents a certain sequence of thought development: thesis, antithesis, synthesis and denouement. True, this fundamental principle has not always been respected.

The sonnet is the only genre of lyrics where mathematics and harmony have merged so inspiredly. This is a poetic form consisting of fourteen lines arranged in two ways. There may be two quatrains and two terzets. Three quatrains and distichs are also possible. Initially, it was assumed that only two rhymes exist in quatrains, while two or three rhymes can exist in tercets.

A sonnet is a work with a certain norm of syllables. Ideally, when it contains 154 syllables, while the lines of quatrains are one syllable more than the lines of terzets.

The history of this genre of poetry is much controversial. There is a version that initially the sonnet was an integral part of the Kanson - lyric songs of the troubadours. It is believed that the sonnet originated in the 13th century in Italy, and more specifically in Sicily. It quickly became the most popular poetic genre and instantly spread throughout Europe, so it was not possible to establish the exact date of writing the first sonnet. The first author of this genre is called the poet Giacomo da Lentino, a notary at the court of Frederick II.

The title of this lyrical work contains an indication that the sonnet is a musical poetic form. It is the musicality of the sonnet that has always been attached and is given particular importance. In part, it is achieved by alternating female and male rhymes. When writing a sonnet, the poet must rely on the rule according to which, his composition should be completed with a female rhyme, if it was started with a male and, accordingly, vice versa.

For centuries, the sonnet has been the most common lyrical genre. His species diversity allowed him to become one of the most viable types of lyrics. Over eight centuries, a huge number of sonnets have been created in world literature by various authors of various eras and cultures. These are the classic love sonnets written by G. Cavalcanti and F. Petrarch; and sonnets-manifestos dedicated to poetic preferences, S. Baudelaire and A. Pushkin; and initiation sonnets, for example, the work of A. Akhmatova, “The Artist”. Such types of sonnets as mythological sonnets based on legends and legends about previous events described in the literature take place and are developing. It is this continuity of male and female, past and future, which is inherent in the genre of sonnet itself, bears the conviction that it is infinite.
