Why do you need ellipsis?

Ellipsis (or, as it is also called, ellipsis) is one of the most mysterious punctuation marks in Russian. This sign appears in the middle of the XIX century, and before that - it had neither an official name nor status. In the 19th century, the ellipsis was called the “preventive sign” and served to indicate the incompleteness of thought or wording.

In modern Russian, ellipsis refers to the separating punctuation marks. The ellipsis at the end of a sentence is used in the following cases:

1) to reflect the emotional understatement, lack of understanding of thought;

2) to emphasize the significance of what was said, the presence of a hidden meaning or context, illogism.

To give an emotional coloring to the statement, the ellipsis can be combined with a question or exclamation mark. In such situations, they use the characters "?.." and "!..", that is, a question or exclamation mark replaces the first point.

There are no other exact rules regarding the setting of the ellipsis at the end of a sentence in Russian. That is why the ellipsis is often considered an intonational-emotional, copyright sign. In fiction, ellipsis is a means of style expression. This sign, along with the exclamation mark, was very fond of V.V. Mayakovsky.

An ellipsis can also be in the middle of a sentence. This sign is often used if it is necessary to quote part of a quote or direct speech. If a large piece of text is missing in the quote, the ellipsis is enclosed in angle brackets -.

When recording algebraic examples, the ellipsis reads "and so on." This character is often used when writing sequences or when indicating an infinite repetition of numbers (0.3333 …).
