Currently, Eurasia is considered the largest continent on Earth. It, in turn, is divided into 2 parts of the world: Europe and Asia. Of great interest is the history of the study of this amazing continent. It begins long before our era.

Discovery of Europe

The study of Europe can be divided into several stages.

The first stage begins from the second millennium BC and ends with the fifth century. During this period, the ancient Cretans explored the territory of the Pellopones peninsula, participating in battles. At that time they passed to the archipelagos of the Aegean Sea. Other people (appenins) discovered the island of Malta, Sicily, Sardinia. Despite all this, a complete picture of Europe was not yet. Therefore, the journey continued.

The second stage begins in 5 and ends in the 3rd century BC. A great contribution here was made by travelers from ancient Greece. They reached the territory of modern France and Spain, swam in many seas of Europe. It was they who discovered the Balkan and Apennine peninsulas. Of great importance are the merits of Pifey.

The third stage is connected with swimming and hiking the Romans. It lasted until the 2nd century AD. The famous commander Scipio explored the Pyrenees. One cannot but mention the great Caesar, who with his troops marched through the territories of many modern countries (France, Germany, Great Britain). Rivers such as the Danube and the Rhine have been discovered.

The fourth stage falls on the 6-17th century. This time brought many great discoveries. It should be noted the study of the Irish and the Vikings. The latter sailed the Mediterranean Sea, circled many islands. This era is known for such great navigators as V. Barents, Bure.

The fifth stage lasted until the 20th century. Ladoga, Onega lakes, European mountains, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land were discovered.
