The correct choice of stress in the words of the Russian language depends on various reasons - sometimes you should focus on the language from which the given word is borrowed, sometimes stress is explained grammatically (depending on which part of the speech the word is), some words need to be simply remembered.

The word "catalog" comes from the Greek katalogos and means "list, list." In Greek, the second syllable is stressed. Also, in many European languages that borrowed this word from the Greeks, it is customary to maintain the emphasis of the original source.

However, the Russian language unambiguously adopted another variant of pronouncing the word "catalog", namely with emphasis on the last syllable. Use exactly this stress, no matter what type of catalog you are talking about: alphabetical catalog, catalog of goods, catalog of the exhibition.

Such an utterance is the only correct one, in contrast, for example, from such words as "cottage cheese", "girlish", "passed", where the stress on both the first and second syllables is allowed. Note that there are very few such words in Russian, and for the majority there are still strict rules regarding the emphasis. Interestingly, even many librarians insist on mispronouncing the word “catalog” with an emphasis on the “a” of the second syllable.

Remember immediately groups of the same type of words, the stress of which is often in doubt. Just like in the word “catalog”, the last stressed syllable is the literary norm for such words as “contract”, “rings”, “portfolio”, “quarter” and some others.
