How to teach a child to multiply

Younger students sometimes find it difficult to master such a mathematical action as multiplication. It is necessary to understand the causes of the difficulties of the child. Sometimes, a child who is successfully mastering an elementary school program suddenly stumbles when studying the subject of “Multiplication”. Do not panic about this and scold the child. One of the reasons for misfires when solving examples of multiplication is that the child did not understand the very essence of this action. Therefore, try to explain to the child what multiplication is.

Take counting sticks, sweets, or some other small items. Lay them on the table in pairs. For example, 3 pairs in a row. Of course, the child will quickly calculate how many sweets are on the table.

Suggest writing this as an example of addition. It will turn out: "2 + 2 + 2 = 6". Observe together with the child what the peculiarity of the terms is. They are the same! And if you continue the series? "2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10" Now ask your child the question: "How else can I write this mathematical expression?" And you will see how he himself will find the correct answer: "2x3 = 6", "2x5 = 10".

Do some more experiments with sweets or counting sticks. Lay them out in 3, 4, etc. Write down addition examples first, and then convert them into multiplication expressions. Together with the child, draw groups of various objects in order to write examples of addition and multiplication on their basis.

Another reason for difficulties with multiplication may be ignorance of the multiplication table. Be patient and help the child memorize the table.
