There are 33 letters in the Russian alphabet. It is easy to remember. It is much more difficult to understand the phonetics of the language, because there can be more or less sounds in a word than alphabetic characters. Sometimes, when pronouncing them out loud, several letters merge into a single sound. Conversely, one element of the alphabet denotes two sounds. In order to learn how to accurately conduct phonetic analysis of a word, you need to remember the basic rules.

Instruction manual

one

Write the word intended for phonetic analysis on a separate sheet of paper. Count the number of letters in it. Break the word into syllables, indicate stress.

2

Say the word out loud. Do this quickly first, as you usually say. Then say slowly, stretching the vowels. Focus and listen carefully to the sounds. Now write down the word exactly as you heard it. It will be a phonetic transcription.

3

There are special characters on the letter to indicate the phonetic form. The whole word is enclosed in square brackets, and the softness of the consonant is indicated by an apostrophe. For example, a transcription of the word "ice" would look like this: [l'ot] ".

4

Write the word vertically, one letter on each line. In parentheses indicate the sound indicated by the letter. Analyze every sound. First of all, determine whether he is a vowel or a consonant.

5

Describe the vowel sound on the basis of "shock - unstressed." Please note that some vowels indicate two sounds if they are at the beginning of a word, after vowels, or after a soft and hard sign: “I” is heard as [ya], “yu” - [yu], “yo” - [yo], "e" - [ye]. Under stress, these letters indicate one sound and soften the consonant.

6

The consonant sound may be: 1. Hard or soft ("b" - "b '"). Always remain firm [g], [w], [q], soft remain [h '], [w'], [y ']. 2. Paired or unpaired ("d" - "t"). Sounds denoted by the letters "x", "c", "h", "u", "l", "m", "n", "p", "y" do not have par. 3. Voiced or deaf ("g" - "k"). Only voiced can be the sounds [th], [l], [m], [n], [p], only deaf - [x], [c], [h], [u].

7

An important exception is when the combination is pronounced as a single sound. In the Russian language, "mid", "zh", "zh" sound like [u], "ds", "ts" and "ts" - like [ts]. Another problem can be unpronounceable consonants at the root. For example, in the word "sun" the sound indicated by the letter "l" is not heard.
