The term "epithet" itself came to us from their Greek language and literally translates as "attached." That is, it is an addition to the main word and allows you to characterize its emotional coloring. The main task of the epithet in the text is to give it a special semantic expressiveness, and sometimes even completely change the meaning of words and expressions. In the theory of literature there is no unequivocal opinion whether the epithet refers to figures or paths, or whether it is an independent device of poetic depiction.

Epithets are widespread in poetry. However, any prose creation also contains many similar words and phrases. To accurately identify the epithet in the text, you need to know that they can be very different parts of speech. The most frequently encountered epithets are adjectives (silver laughter of a bells, magic sounds of a flute). They can be an adverb (fervently prayed, passionately cried out), noun (feast of disobedience), numeral (sixth hour, third hands). Regardless of morphological affiliation, epithets give the text a special colorfulness and richness.

Epithets are divided into several types, based on the function that they perform in the text. There are permanent epithets that are used in stable terms (good fellow, damp earth, distant kingdom). Evaluation (unbearable lightness, lost feelings) and descriptive epithets (life-giving moisture, tired heart) give a characteristic of an object, reveal its unusual signs. Emotional epithets (a sad time, a sad landscape) provide a particular expressiveness of a phrase or word. In their composition, epithets can be simple (ringing forest) and complex (milky-white birch).
