What is narration

Often a person who likes reading begins to be interested not only in the texts themselves, but also in literary criticism - the direction of scientific knowledge that helps to interpret these texts. An important aspect of literary theory is terms such as, for example, "narration."

From a literary point of view, explanatory dictionaries define narration as the text of a work without taking into account dialogues. The narrative may consist of descriptions, reasoning, stories about any incidents. Often in literary texts, the narrative takes up the bulk of the work.

There are various types of storytelling. First of all, the text can be composed in an impersonal form, from the author or in the form of a direct speech-reflection of the character. The first option gives the writer the opportunity to be "above the action", sanctifying the heroes' actions from various sides. The second method, on the one hand, limits the author's perception of the character, and on the other hand, provides the necessary means to demonstrate the inner world of his hero, his feelings and thoughts. Usually, the author selects only one type of narration for the work, but they can be combined.

Another characteristic of the narrative is the degree of influence of the author’s view on the text. Many literary scholars of the 20th century divided the narrative into objective (without author’s assessment) and subjective (with a clear demonstration of the author’s views on any situation in the text). Nevertheless, this concept can be subjected to serious criticism, since there is no author whose moral evaluations do not affect his work. Even if the views of the writer are not given at the end of the book, like moral fables, they are contained in the entire text and affect the plot and choice of heroes. Therefore, it cannot go about a fully objective narrative in a literary text.

It is also important to mention that the term “narrative” may have a broader meaning. For example, it can be an oral story about any events or a description. In this case, the narrative also does not need to be confused with dialogue - another form of spoken language. Oral narration, as well as written, can be conducted from both the first and third parties.
